How the game works
You drop a ball at the top of a pyramid of pegs. At each peg it goes left or right. At the bottom, a row of slots carries multipliers: small in the middle, large at the edges.
You set two things: the number of rows (usually 8 to 16) and the risk level (low, medium, high), which redistributes the multipliers between centre and edges.
The stated RTP is 99% — among the highest in online casino. We will show why that figure is both true and misleading.
The part nobody calculates: the binomial distribution
At each peg the ball has roughly a 50/50 chance of going left. On a 16-row pyramid it therefore makes 16 consecutive coin flips. The total number of possible paths is 216 = 65,536.
To land at the far left, the ball needs 16 lefts in a row: exactly one path out of 65,536. To land in the centre it needs 8 lefts and 8 rights in any order: 12,870 different paths.
This is Pascal's triangle. Here is the full distribution:
Probability of each slot (16 rows)
These numbers depend on no casino, no algorithm and no luck. They are properties of the shape of the pyramid.
| Slot | Possible paths | Probability | In plain terms |
|---|---|---|---|
| Centre | 12,870 | 19.6% | 1 ball in 5 |
| 1 slot from centre | 11,440 | 17.5% | 1 in 6 |
| 2 slots | 8,008 | 12.2% | 1 in 8 |
| 3 slots | 4,368 | 6.7% | 1 in 15 |
| 4 slots | 1,820 | 2.8% | 1 in 36 |
| 5 slots | 560 | 0.85% | 1 in 117 |
| 6 slots | 120 | 0.18% | 1 in 546 |
| 7 slots | 16 | 0.024% | 1 in 4,096 |
| Outer edge | 1 | 0.0015% | 1 in 65,536 |
The edge multiplier is decoration
The x1000 shown at the extremes has a probability of 0.0015% per ball. With two edges, your chance of hitting either one is 1 in 32,768.
In money: at €1 per ball you would need to stake roughly €32,000 to hit the top multiplier once on average. That multiplier would return €1,000.
This is not a scam, it is signage. The big number exists to be seen, not reached — exactly like a slot machine jackpot.
What the 99% RTP actually hides
Look at the table again: the five central slots absorb 79% of all balls. Those are precisely the slots carrying the smallest multipliers — frequently below 1, meaning you get back less than you staked.
So the 99% is built like this: you lose a little, very often, and win a lot, almost never. Across a normal session the experience is slow steady erosion, not an alternation of wins and losses.
And as with every game, that 99% applies to total amount wagered, not to your deposit. Recycling winnings multiplies the volume and therefore the expected loss.
Risk level: what it changes and what it does not
- What it changes: how multipliers are spread across the slots. On high risk the edges pay more and the centre pays even less.
- What it does not change: the probability of reaching any given slot. The table above is identical at every risk setting — it depends on geometry, not on the option you pick.
- What it also changes: your variance. High risk means more violent sessions in both directions. Expected value stays the same.
- Row count does alter the table: fewer rows flatten the distribution, more rows concentrate balls in the centre and push the edges further out of reach.
What is genuinely under your control
No setting makes Plinko profitable. Its one real advantage over other games is that its mechanics are fully transparent and computable — you can know exactly what you are playing, which is rare.
The three real levers: how much you stake, how fast you drop balls (a fast game reaches the wagered volume far quicker), and when you stop.

Frequently asked questions
What is the RTP of Plinko?
99%, one of the highest in online casino. The game keeps 1% of total wagered over the long run. That figure applies to cumulative bets, not to your initial deposit.
What are the odds of hitting the maximum multiplier?
On a 16-row pyramid an edge slot has a probability of 1 in 65,536. With two edges, that is roughly 1 in 32,768 per ball. At €1 per ball this represents about €32,000 staked to hit it once on average.
Where do most balls land?
In the centre. The five central slots absorb around 79% of all balls on a 16-row pyramid, and those slots carry the smallest multipliers.
Does the risk level change my odds?
No. It changes multiplier values and therefore session variance, but the probability of reaching each slot depends only on the geometry of the pyramid and stays identical.
Is there a winning Plinko strategy?
No. Each ball is independent and the distribution is fixed by the shape of the game. No setting, timing or staking progression alters the 99% RTP.
